The point of departure for this lecture series is the following statement: “postcolonialism is here in Europe, not far away from us.” It is in this sense that we suggest to focus on “postcolonial Europe,” and to discuss the relevance of postcolonial theories to European societies. At stake here are not only colonial legacies but also questions of transnational migration, refugees, asylum seekers, diasporic communities, changing conceptions of citizenship, homeland and territory, new racisms in “the new Europe,” and in what ways and to what extent these issues are challenging and changing the notion of “Europe.” The lecture series aims to discuss the ways in which the imperial legacy is invoked in Europe today, and in what ways debates about the prohibition of headscarves in French schools, apologies for slavery in Britain, the recurring dispute over Dutch “excesses” in post-war Indonesia, and talks at the French parliament to have the “positive” aspects of colonial history taught in schools are relevant to this discussion.
